Race Weekend Logistics
Pre-Ride
Most race venues open for a pre-ride the day before the event — usually Saturday for a Sunday race, or Friday evening for a Saturday race. Pre-riding the course is strongly encouraged for all athletes. Knowing the terrain, line choices, and technical features ahead of time makes a huge difference on race day.
Team Potluck Dinner
The night before each race, the team gathers for a potluck dinner — a beloved Mountain Monsters tradition. Families bring a dish to share, and it’s a great chance to relax, connect, and get race-day ready together.
Camping & Lodging
Race venues are spread across Colorado, so most race weekends involve an overnight stay. The team often camps together near the venue, which is one of the highlights of the race season.
- We strongly recommend booking accommodations as early as possible — nearby campgrounds and hotels fill up fast once the race schedule is published.
- Camping together as a team is encouraged when available (we usually communicate options on TeamSnap for those races, like Leadville).
- Check the individual race links in the schedule above for venue-specific lodging suggestions from the Colorado League.
Volunteer Opportunities
Races can only happen because of volunteers. As a team, we’re expected to contribute — and it’s a great way to see the course from a different perspective.
Set Up & Tear Down
Volunteers are needed to help set up the course the day before and break it down after the race. If you’re able to help, please show up early and pitch in!
League Volunteer Requirements
The Colorado High School Cycling League has volunteer requirements for team participation. Each race offers a sign-up to help and includes a wide range of opportunities, from parking duty to pit coordination to course marshalling (my favorite). Families should plan to contribute volunteer hours across the season.
Participation is tracked for each team! Additionally, we have a home weekend where we’re expected to do the bulk of volunteering - this year it is Race #3 in Glenwood Springs.
How Races Work
Colorado League races use a cross-country (XC) format — riders complete multiple laps of a course that typically combines climbing, technical terrain, and descents.
Categories are split by school grade:
- High School — Freshman, Sophomore, Junior Varsity, and Varsity (separate categories for boys and girls)
- Middle School — 6th, 7th, 8th grade (Middle School Mayhem events)
Scoring: Riders earn points based on their finishing place in their category. Team standings are calculated from combined athlete points across the season.
What to expect on race day:
- Morning check-in for teams
- Schedule posted on board in the team tent
- Warm-ups immediately before each category
- Category start waves (see schedule board)
- Races are 2 laps for most categories (3 laps for varsity)
- Awards ceremony after results are finalized
Team Stack App
The Colorado League uses the Stack Team app for race-day communication.
